Constable's paintings often seem to sum up the essence of the English countryside. So closely is his work bound up with popular images of the British landscape, that it is surprising to realise that he had to battle against tremendous official indifference during his own lifetime...His legendary method, which demanded painstaking observation...earned him a reputation as a faithful copyist of nature. His intentions, however, were far more ambitious. He hoped to convince his colleagues and the public that English domestic scenery was a legitimate vehicle for the kinds of serious moral ideas traditionally associated with historical or mythological themes. He also sought to illustrate what he described as 'the natural history of the landscape', meaning nature's processes as well as her superficial appearance. The sheer diversity of Constable's subject matter is often overlooked...
