Henry James considered this book to be his 'most perfect' work of art. The ambassadors of the title are emissaries sent by Mrs Newsome, a wealthy New England widow, to restore to the home-town and the family business her son Chad, who has lingered too long in Paris, reputedly detained by a sordid liaison. Lambert Strether, the first of the envoys and the novel's strait-laced hero, embarks on the mission only to find himself caught up in a romantic intrigue, the outcome of which will radically change the direction and purpose of his life.
