He was only 16 and not quite a deputy, but Jason's lawman instinct alerted him to the sound of gunfire ripping the early morning calm. Up the street a stranger with six guns ablaze and murder in his eyes ran out from Satterfield's general store, his sack bulging with stolen gold. Dropping on one knee and calling on the perpetrator to halt, Jason drew his .36 Colt and fired at the retreating desperado. Here was his chance. If Jason could apprehend the criminal, a deputy's star would surely be his reward. But when Jason tried to round up a posse, he quickly discovered that no one was willing to follow a 16-year-old who, despite his impressive size, was just one more tenderfoot out to get himself killed. Undaunted, Jason set out to bring the marauding bandit to trial, but as he would soon learn, there was much more to being a lawman than wearing a badge and carrying a pistol.
