Cumbernauld boasts a rich history from Roman times, with the Antonine Wall nearby; through formation of the historic village and construction of Cumbernauld Castle; to the building of Cumbernauld House in the mid-eighteenth century. Existing for much of the time as little more than a small village and a number of farms, Cumbernauld was changed forever with its designation as a New Town in December 1955. Cumbernauld was one of five Scottish New Towns created to alleviate overcrowding in Glasgow and Edinburgh, with families who arrived in Cumbernauld being greeted with good quality housing, new employment opportunities, and large open greenspaces. This book will help tell the story of Cumbernauld, from before its inception as a New Town to the present day, where it continues to grow and develop as one of Scotland's largest towns.
