The Cadder Pit Disaster occured on a summer Sunday backshift on 3 August 1913. Twenty-six miners descended Pit 15 and by the end of the shift, twenty-two of them lay dead in a gas-filled inferno which millions of gallons of water could not quench. Most of the men came from Lambhill and Mavis Valley area of North Glasgow. Three escaped and one was rescued. They left behind thirteen widows and forty-eight fatherless children. This event marked the beginning of the end of coal mining in the district.
