General Hugh Cairns is rewarded for his services for king and country with a stately house and estate and is also knighted by King George himself and given the title of Earl of Lanark. So, he and his wife, two sons and a daughter become the first custodians of Clanmere House. Clanmere means 'clan boundary'. The battle of Culloden is a defeat for the highlanders and so they plot to lay siege on Clanmere House with the intent to assassinate Sir Hugh. Two highlanders, Jamie Maclaren and Fergus MacLeod switch loyalties and come to the aid of Sir Hugh. Jamie steals the heart of Kathy Cairns, Sir Hugh's daughter and they seal their love with a kiss on the old bridge.
