Ruby Bickerstaff reappears from hiding at Clanmere House while Nellie Tyrell secures employment as housekeeper at Clanmere. The hidden money from the stolen sketches 20 years ago is again a matter of concern. Sir Robert dies after a long illness and his son and heir Donald becomes Seventh Earl of Lanark. Donald, now the new Laird, befriends the beautiful young housemaid, Nellie Tyrell and they fall in love. They are married and inquisitive little Nell becomes the Lady Cairns. War in Europe breaks out in 1939 and Donald is called up for duty. After recovering from a war injury and post traumatic syndrome, he returns to Nellie and their new child.
