Dr Mike Wilson is a Dublin City Coroner responsible for investigating unusual, unexplained, violent or unnatural deaths in the city. In late 2009 Patrick Dowling, a 28-year-old drug addict, was found hanging in woodland. Dowling had been an addict with poor life expectancy and, as far as the police were concerned, the case was closed: a verdict of suicide was recorded. But, after studying the file, Wilson comes to a very different conclusion.
