Event

Join Damian Barr and Paul English in conversation as they explore the creation of the new stage version of Damian's celebrated memoir for the National Theatre of Scotland.

Award winning writer Damian Barr (writer & broadcaster - Maggie & Me, You will Be Safe Here, and Big Scottish Book Club) will be interviewed by Paul English (writer, journalist and broadcaster - To Be Here Someday - the official biography of Deacon Blue) for this in-depth conversation.

The National Theatre of Scotland's production of Maggie & Me will be touring in May and June 2024, including a run at Lanternhouse, Cumbernauld.

Published in 2013, Maggie & Me, Damian Barr's celebrated memoir about growing up gay in Thatcher's Britain, was named Sunday Times Memoir of the Year, awarded the Paddy Power Political Satire Award and saw Barr named Stonewall Writer of the Year.

From the furnaces of the Ravenscraig Steelworks to the sanctuary of Carfin Grotto, there's pain and joy, coming of age and coming out and the powerful spectre of Margaret Thatcher.

"You resist by telling your story, you resist by being honest about your pain and suffering, and not having to bear that silently." Damian Barr

Damian will talk to Paul about the journey he undertook, with his creative collaborators, to transform his deeply personal memoir into a bold and explosive new production for the stage.
